Invited by a Spanish university, Constantino Augusto de Moreas lands in Spain after a lifetime in Cuba, which ended in his scholarly research on the poet José Martí. Suddenly, he decides not to assist to the Congress in Zaragoza where he was invited and instead continue on the train to Barcelona. He is interested to know how to live in his idolized Europe, plus his desire of giving true meaning to his dull life, and regain old illusions, old loves that have been cast aside for the time and decency. Staying at a pension of Raval, intimate with the owner and gradually discovers that reality is harder than he suspected. Far from Havana and what was his world, only a ghostly image reappears in his memory: that of an old fellow in a sugar harvest, a classical dancer that promised in his youth, would end up acting with a famous company of Montecarlo Russian Ballet. Is the trip a flight, a final opportunity granted like the protagonist, an adjustment not decoded in the past, or the assumption of an end?
